Local author, John Cunningham and Digital Events Coordinator, Liana Oh, will be marking the 106th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge with a video presentation. The event will take place on Saturday, March 25 at 2:00pm at the DesBrisay.
The video by Ms. Oh, of Bridgewater, will feature content from John Cunningham’s book, “Where Duty Lies,” winner of the Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Society Award for Historical non-fiction. It tells of the role a specialized military battalion played with the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in preparing for the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
It was a battle largely launched from underground. Supply lines to the hills were quickly built and repaired to bring in troops and guns. Much of this work was done by the so-called “handymen of the army– the pioneers”. They were a specialized group under command of trained engineers.
But their contribution to Canada’s outstanding victory was considerable. And men from Bridgewater were very much a part of these often under-recognized battalions.
