Mi’kmaq Canoe Building with Todd Labrador

Learn from craftsman Todd Labrador as he builds a traditional Mi’kmaq canoe in this live demonstration.

The DesBrisay Museum is excited to share that as part of the Town of Bridgewater’s 125th anniversary celebrations, and in honour of the historic ancestral presence of the Mi’kmaq in the LaHave River Valley and Mi’kmaw History Month, renowned Mi’kmaw craftsman Todd Labrador will be on site at our museum to carry out a traditional building demonstration of a 16-foot birch bark canoe on certain days throughout the month of October.

Come and engage with Todd during the build to learn more about this iconic symbol of the Mi’kmaw cultural landscape and his own personal connections to this community.

Admission to DesBrisay Museum is free, and we are open to the public from 1:00 – 5:00 PM, Tuesday through Saturday with the exception of Saturday October 12th when we will close for the long weekend. Please note that, while visitors will be able to see the canoe throughout October, Todd will only be providing live demonstrations on certain days. Please check the calendar before coming to visit. If you have a group, we recommend booking in advance by reaching out to the museum at museum@bridgewater.ca or 902-543-4033.

This project is made possible by a partnership between the Government of Canada, the Town of Bridgewater, and the Labrador Family
