Mi’kmaq Canoe Launch

We were honoured to have Mi’kmaw craftsman Todd Labrador and his family build a traditional birch bark canoe here at the museum during Mi’kmaq History Month in October 2024. The canoe was proudly launched in Mi’kma’ki on November 2, 2024, Pijinuiskaq (LaHave River), Miller Point Peace Park, just outside of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

Throughout the month we had 1000 visitors! Many school groups, tourists, and visitors from near and far attended the museum to see live demonstrations from Todd and learn more about Mi’kmaq culture and traditions. A huge thank you to Todd and his family for their time and talents!

Nearly 100 people attended the launch as we celebrated Bridgewater’s 125th anniversary and honoured the historic ancestral Mi’kmaq presence in the Bridgewater area and the entire Pijinuiskaq (LaHave River) Valley. Thanks to everyone who joined us!
